How to Choose a New Ceiling Fan

Have you just moved into your new home or decided to install up-to-date technology? This can be difficult as it is hard to decide what fits in your home.

As the focus of today is ceiling fans, this can be a tough decision as it depends on many factors. This can include the ceiling height, room size, the type of fan, the brand, and more!

In this blog post, our skilled electricians from Mr. Electric will explain how to choose a new ceiling fan and what parts to look out for.

The Type

There are fans made for the outside and inside. It all depends on what you are looking for. If you’re seeking something for your porch, then you’ll need to pick a specific fan that meets the qualifications for it. Sometimes the change of air and humidity can cause a fan to slowly break down if it isn’t made for the outdoors. For this reason if you want something for the outdoors, make sure it is made for it.

As for an indoor fan, it usually meets all qualifications. The only thing about indoors is that it can come with 2 different modes. A winter and summer mode. When you switch to winter, it will spin a certain way. This applies for the summer version too, but it will spin the opposite of what the winter mode spun. These indoor fans have slanted wings for the summer and winter mode as well. This helps airflow as the wings spin.

Room Size

The room size contributes a lot to the type of ceiling fan installation you want. With a ceiling fan, you want the whole room to be ventilated and cool, not just only some parts. There are measurements and recommendations for fan sizes depending on the room size.

If you have a small room, purchasing a fan between 29 and 39 inches is ideal. If it is a large room, then between 40 and 50 inches. If you have a spacious room then a fan around 55 inches or more will do the job for you.

It is important to pick the right fan size as it will ventilate your room better and help the area look more appealing.

Ceiling Height

Just like your room size, your ceiling height plays a major role as well. If you have a high ceiling, the ventilation can become worse since the fan is so high up. For this reason, there are mounting sizes for these situations.

If your ceiling height is around 8 feet, then a small mount is ideal for you. If you have a ceiling height of about 9 feet, then a standard mount is the best. Ceilings that are 10 feet or more are treated with an extended mount.

A key thing that people tend to forget is to purchase their ceiling fan depending on their ceiling height. Most buyers go off at their own height. Double check to make sure your purchase goes along with the height of your ceiling.
