5 things to do when your circuit breaker trips:

1.  Safety first

As we said earlier, if your circuit breaker trips and you lost power, you are going to have to deal with electrical wiring and power which can be scary if you’ve never done it before. It’s extremely important to have the proper safety gear and equipment when working in or around your breaker box. Make sure to stay away from exposed wiring and don’t try to take your breaker box apart. Leave that work to Mr. Electric!

2.  Turn off lights & appliances

If your circuit breaker tripped, you want to make sure you don’t blow a fuse too. If this happens, you will lose power potentially throughout your entire home. To avoid this completely, make sure to turn off all your lights, devices, appliances, etc. before you deal with repairing your circuit breaker. This will ensure you don’t get electrocuted or blow out all the power in your home.

3.  Find your breaker box

Are you a new homeowner and you aren’t sure where your circuit box is? Before you do anything in your new home, you should always find your circuit box. You never know when you are going to lose power, blow a fuse, or trip a breaker, so make sure you know where it is and which breaker goes to which part of your home.

4.  Search for the appropriate breaker

When checking your circuit breaker for a tripped breaker, you want to locate which breaker is switched to the ‘off’ position. If there is no color or label displayed, search for the breaker that is in the opposite direction of the others.

5.  Flip to ‘on’

Once you know which breaker is the one that tripped, simply switch it back to the ‘on’ position and your power should be restored.
